Self Portrait Tuesday: Take a bawth

Not even wrapping my bandaged foot in a garbage bag and suspending it on the edge of the tub can keep me from enjoying a bath. Sitting so still, enveloped by the warm, gentle water… it is the ultimate in relaxation. I have to make more time for these long, tranquil soaks. It’s so much more elegant than jumping in the shower for a furious scrub down, trying to be out and dressed before Clifford is over. Baths force me to pay attention to my body, feeling each muscle as it slowly lets go and begins to relax. It’s quiet and steamy and intimate. Perfect.

self portrait tuesday: decorate

My goal for the new year is to take care of myself better. Part of that includes making the home I live in reflect my style and personality so that it actually feels like home. We’ve lived here for almost three years now, but most rooms still remain bland and undecorated. When we finally got around to painting the living room back in August, I realized what a difference the color makes to my mood when I’m at home. I chose colors that would brighten the place up while still giving the room a calm and soothing feel. It has been an incredibly positive change for me. Sometimes I go in there just to sit and bask in the beautiful colors. Piece by piece, the room has come together. A gorgeous chunky knit throw, a beautiful vase given to me by a dear friend, a few more books on the shelves… With each addition I see more of myself displayed in the lovely surroundings, and I finally feel like this is a place where I truly belong.

The other day I went to an antique shop to browse the shelves for something interesting to add to my room. I found a huge box full of old postcards with an entire section devoted to cards from Washington State. I left the store with a stack of some amazing finds. I found cards like the one in my hand, a card dated 1980 depicting a photo of the famous eruption, all the way back to ones dated in the early 1900s with pictures of different structures in the Seattle area. The black and white one with a ripped corner is actually what the University of Washington looked like in 1909! The fact that the cards show some of the history of my home state is so special to me, and I can’t wait to display these on my pretty blue walls.

self portrait tuesday wednesday: watch out!

Just now, walking up the stairs, I placed my foot a little too close to the edge of the step, slipped backwards out of my slipper and flailed about spectacularly until I finally saved myself by slamming my elbow against the railing and regaining my balance. I’ll have a lovely bruise tomorrow. I wouldn’t really call myself clumsy… I think that I am actually a fairly graceful person when I want to be, but the problem is I just never pay attention. In fact, my mind is usually so far away from whatever it is my body is doing that I never remember getting injured in the first place. Bruises seem to appear out of nowhere, and I can only guess where they came from by their placement on my body. My hips always have a fresh bruise or two from not paying attention when I walk around the counter in my kitchen. My shins get bruised from the car door, the coffee table, or the edge of the bathtub. When Zibbit was a baby, I was convinced I had contracted some sort of fatal blood disease because of the dozens of pinpoint bruises that had suddenly cropped up on the sides of both of my knees. It was only after a week’s worth of panicking and a completely pointless trip to the doctor that I caught myself bumping her infant carrier against my legs as I walked.

I’m not a huge resolution maker, but my goal for this year is going to be paying more attention to my body’s needs. Mental rest, good sleep, and consistent breaks from the daily drudgery are specific needs that I’m going to try to focus on more. Perhaps I could also be benefited from a little more attention to where my body is in relation to hard objects. This bruise on my calf? No idea where it came from. SPC Resolution number one: pay attention and watch out!
