Gimme what you got
I’m writing a short story, and I’ve come to a road block. I need some ideas! I have this character, and she’s really sad, but I don’t know why…
If you were a complicated young woman that we don’t know much about, why would you go to church and come out crying every time? What are those tears about?
It’s really hard to think when I have an extremely gassy dog lying at my feet.
UPDATE: I figured it out. And it’s awesome. Will post the story when I’m done.

If you can finish this story by Tuesday, I’ll publish it.

how about something along the lines of: she goes to church with so much expectation…that it is going to fix her immediately on the spot…and it is such a high while she is there being around all these caring, loving people (superficial or not), but when church is over she realizes that life and her problems are still there waiting for her and they overwhelm her as she leaves the safety net of the church to go back home. she starts to feel disconnected from everyone as she realizes another dismal, dreaded week of lonliness and depression is ahead of her. she could also be sad/crying because she feels that the people in the church are “so perfect” and have never had anything bad happen to them so how could they possibly comprehend her problems/life/depression because they have no idea what it is like/eperienced it. (sorry for the run on sentences and such and not editing.)

Maybe church evokes a memory from her past or childhood. Her favorite relative took her there, and has since died…

that she loves the place but will never measure up to its expectations, that she regrets the mistakes of her youth and is reminded of them, that she has been touched in a way she never thought possible previously, sentimental memories (as was previously mentioned), of course all of this is purely hypothetical for fictional purposes, right? ;>)

She wants so badly to believe, but her faith has been tested, and finds it almost impossible to believe that there is anything else out there beyond life as we know it… ???
