self portrait tuesday: decorate

My goal for the new year is to take care of myself better. Part of that includes making the home I live in reflect my style and personality so that it actually feels like home. We’ve lived here for almost three years now, but most rooms still remain bland and undecorated. When we finally got around to painting the living room back in August, I realized what a difference the color makes to my mood when I’m at home. I chose colors that would brighten the place up while still giving the room a calm and soothing feel. It has been an incredibly positive change for me. Sometimes I go in there just to sit and bask in the beautiful colors. Piece by piece, the room has come together. A gorgeous chunky knit throw, a beautiful vase given to me by a dear friend, a few more books on the shelves… With each addition I see more of myself displayed in the lovely surroundings, and I finally feel like this is a place where I truly belong.

The other day I went to an antique shop to browse the shelves for something interesting to add to my room. I found a huge box full of old postcards with an entire section devoted to cards from Washington State. I left the store with a stack of some amazing finds. I found cards like the one in my hand, a card dated 1980 depicting a photo of the famous eruption, all the way back to ones dated in the early 1900s with pictures of different structures in the Seattle area. The black and white one with a ripped corner is actually what the University of Washington looked like in 1909! The fact that the cards show some of the history of my home state is so special to me, and I can’t wait to display these on my pretty blue walls.

This month’s theme is resolutions. Find more here.

  2. You know, I’ve lived in my house for 7 years, and I really haven’t added my own “touches” and I just need to do it. Our house is decorated in early toddler. My inspiration was Laura Ashley when I was single, but I’m afraid my husband would gag if I went that route. I’ll find a happy medium.

  4. How COOL. You know I am all about making your home an expression of who you are. I’m a huge believer that beauty introduces the presence of God (Hi Ammon :) ) and I love that about my home, too. I feel His laugh in my red walls and His peace in the filigree of my lamp. Not only that but I think it makes me enjoy who I am more! Like the birthday party pictures you took with all the balloons… it makes my heart sing with what I love about my life: family, friends, colour, getting together over good food (or be-headed muffins) and fun details….

I can’t wait to see what your home will look like this time next year. I think it will be a visual journal for you of coming out of pain into light.

wow. you can tell my kids are in bed and I have time on my hands….

    :)
