less than 24 hours to go

Tomorrow at this time I should be just waking up in the recovery room after the long-awaited ankle surgery.

I’ve never been under general anesthesia before. I am absolutely terrified.

  1. Just think positive thoughts as you are going under and you’ll be fine. Good luck and a quick recovery!

  2. General anesthesia is not so bad, really. It’s very… quick! Suddenly you’re waking up, and it feels as though no time has passed.

I hope it goes smoothly, and especially that you survive the long recovery period!

  3. Does it help if you look at general anesthesia as ‘a period of extremely high quality SLEEP’?

  4. It’s okay to be scared, or even to tell them that you’re nervous once you’re there. It’ll probably make you feel better to be open about it, and I’m sure they will more than understand, and will be very kind with you.

  5. I would absolutely let the anesthesiologist know how you feel. It can help them make sure that you have a good experience. I only went under once (for my wisdom teeth extractions) and it was just like Skye said… like no time passed at all. Just a snap of the fingers between going under and waking up.

    I hope it goes well!

  6. Wandered over just now from Fluid Pudding and wanted to chime in with a “good luck tomorrow” message, along with a “you’ll be fine” and a HEARTY endorsement for the suggestion from one of your other commenters at an earlier post about this that the “roll-a-bout” type of cart, as they referred to it, will totally save your sanity! I’m recovering from a broken ankle, and on crutches I would have lost my mind. Even if you can’t go up and down stairs with it, just using it around the kitchen or while you throw a load of laundry in is *totally* worth while. We’re getting ready to list mine now on eBay and I know you can find loads of them available used, or sometimes a local medical rental place will have them available. In any event, goodest of luck, and I will definitely check back in to see how you’re doing (and also to begin catching up with your evidently compelling blog!)

  7. …And make sure you ask for the anti-nausea pill they can give you beforehand. I’ve had general both ways and not everyone gets nausious from the anesthesia but if there is even the slightest chance you will it is SO worth asking for that tiny pill!

I like the thinking of it as sleep comment, too…. :)

  8. General Anesthesia was very relaxing for me… it was that “oh-I-feel-so-good-and-sleepy” feeling. Hope the experience is a similar one for you.

  9. Well my dear.. I stumbled on to you from Jen over at breed ‘em. I must say I haven’t read much of your post yet.. (sitting in Ohare at the moment so I should have plenty of time to read and catch up) but I have to say what you have done in the past few days took courage! GOOD FOR YOU! I have been contemplating writing a blog from the REAL me.. I had a fake one couldn’t stand it so I quit. I am so terribly afraid someone will stumble across something I have written and send out the men in the light white coats for me.. (I have a very long write up on the word CockTail.. need I say more) I just wanted to say thank you for being a breath of fresh air out here in the world of blogdom.. thank you for your honesty..

I hope all goes well with your surgery.

  10. You’re probably home by now, and I hope you’re feeling ok and that you have someone there to wait on you.

  11. You have nothing to fear in general anesthesia. It’s a nap. A really great nap that seems to last for like five minutes.
